I think one problem with getting a third party going on a national level is that they do impact close elections and generally hurt the candidate most like them. So, they are seen by others like them to be detracting from "the cause."

I am hoping some party can move up slowly: A congressperson or senator. Then, another, then enough that they can make a realistic bid for President. The Independence Party here in Minnesota has fielded some state and federal level candidates that have had more votes than you'd expect. Last election, for example, I voted for Lee for our congressional district's post. Of course, we had a governor but he says he won't be running again.

Personally, I'd like to see a centralist 3rd party so the current two can play more to their conservative/liberal sides. Right now, I seen too much compromise that leaves out ideology.

Of course, a real third party can play hobb with the election, throwing it into the House. Maybe we can go with popular vote instead of Electorial College and do a runoff? America is supposed to be an experiment in democracy, after all.
