Hillary Clinton’s Remarkable Tenacity

Hillary Clinton continues to show remarkable tenacity in her bid to win the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

As Barack Obama remains stymied in yet again addressing the controversy surrounding his relationship with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Hillary Clinton has focused on discussing key 2008 election issues. Clinton hopes to have a strong showing in next Tuesday’s (May 6th) primaries in Indiana and North Carolina.

Hillary Clinton appeared on Fox News for an interview with Bill O’Reilly.

April 22nd - Hillary Clinton wins Pennsylvania Decisively
Hillary Clinton defeated Barack Obama in the April 22nd Pennsylvania primary, winning the popular vote 55% to 45%. Clinton campaigned hard in Pennsylvania and was especially effective in gaining blue collar support by emphasizing “pocket-book” issues and speaking to the concerns of struggling middle class and working class voters.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama committed a campaign gaffe with his unfortunate statement at a fundraiser in San Francisco. Trying to explain his difficulty in winning over working class white voters, Obama asserted, “They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

This now infamous “bitter comment” plagued Obama throughout the final days of the Pennsylvania campaign. This created a good opening for the Clinton campaign to characterize Obama as “out of touch” with “regular” Americans.

Despite Clinton’s impressive win in Pennsylvania, she received a net gain of only 10 delegates from this contest (Clinton won 83 delegates and Obama won 73).

Several pundits pointed out that the Pennsylvania primary “changes nothing”. If Clinton had won by 20 points (instead of ten), super delegates especially may be persuaded to move toward Clinton. If Obama had won or even come within five points, Obama’s campaign may have come closer to “closing the deal”.

Pennsylvania reminded people that Clinton is a tenacious campaigner who doesn’t give up. But we already knew that.

*Delegate Count: Obama maintains lead over Clinton:

Obama: 1730 (total), 1491 (pledged), 239 (super delegates)

Clinton: 1593 (total), 1332 (pledged), 261 (super delegates)

* As of April 30, 2008, according to CNN.
2,025 delegates required to win the nomination.
